海外ポスドクのアプライ方法
海外で研究するためのメモ。
いくつのラボにアプライしたか？
10ラボ。そのうち上位6ラボにまずアプライ。
メールでのアプライ
Your email should contain a “cover letter”, which is just the body of the email. Start by introducing yourself, stating that you’re seeking a postdoc, and specifying when you expect to graduate. Write 1-2 short paragraphs describing your graduate work, then 2-3 short paragraphs explaining why you’re interested in their lab, what potential projects you could envision doing, and what skills you would contribute. Conclude by thanking them and mentioning that you’re attaching your CV, which includes references, and any other attachments you’ve included.
最低限、論文を読んだ感想は入れる。学会で発表を聞いた、とかポスドクや学生と話した、とうを盛り込めると良い。
二週間は反応を待って、一度丁寧なfollow-up mailを入れる。ダメならPIにメールを頼む。
PIを評価する
自身が独立するのを手助けしてくれるか？
具体的には、学会で発表させてくれるか？
ラボのメンバーに聞いた方がいいこと。
Does the PI encourage you to go to conferences?
Did they provide feedback on your grant applications?
What’s it like to write a paper with them?
How do they help when postdocs go on the job market?
Are they a nice person?
Do they make you feel guilty for taking vacations or not coming in on the weekends?
研究室の環境を評価する
ラボの雰囲気は大事。
Do people get along? Do people seem to hang out outside of work? Do people collaborate or informally help each other? Are there conflicts in the lab? Do lab members compete with one another? What is the overall vibe like (professional, friendly, competitive, standoffish, isolated)?
良いラボは仲が良く、社交的で、そういうのは特に昼食を食べに行った際に良く分かる。逆に、悪い点は直ぐには話したがらないから、フランクな会話になるように努める。もしくは本音で話してくれる人を見つける。
最後に、follow-up thank you emailを送って、labにjoinしたい旨を記載する。

この記事を読んで、個人的に改変した上で纏める。
Step1. 10研究室程度、候補を絞り込む
1-1. 行きたい研究室と関連のある知り合いの研究室を探す。
1-2. 行きたいラボの学生やポスドクにコンタクトをとる。
Step2. pesudo-proposalを作成
当該研究室の過去5年分の論文を読む。その研究室の仕事と自分の技術とを融合して提案を考える。
Step3. メールする
メールの文面は短めに。
内容は、
(a) a brief introduction about yourself and your research,
(b) what kind of work you want to do,
(c) why you want to work with them specifically, and
(d) where they can find your list of references.
